"Designers have their fingers on the pulse of humanity in the same way that the Polynesians can read the deep-water currents of the Pacific. And it is precisely this deep intuition and expertise that is going to navigate us out the current mess we’re in and offer new possibilities for the future. It's not to say that designers exclusively have this insight, artists and musicians surely have similar qualities. It's just that now more than ever, designed things are ubiquitous in our lives and carry significant behavioural influence. So like the Polynesian navigators, it is only by understanding where we have come from and how we got here, that we can chart a new course which is precisely what this subject is about."
